Visual Inspection

Visual testing is the most fundamental nondestructive test method. Eighty percent of transport aircraft inspections are visual. Visual testing of part condition and surface detail is often critical for the interpretation of results of other nondestructive test methods and should be a first consideration when any inspection is to be performed. For aircraft and engine maintenance, visual testing is the primary method, both basic observation and enhanced visual techniques. Generally, visual inspections cover a broad area of the aircraft structure and engines. Cracks, corrosion, and disbonds are primary interests. Environmental effects such as sunlight discoloration or chemical attack are also of interest.
