Shearography

Shearographic and holographic interferometry nondestructive testing use laser based imaging interferometers to detect, measure, and analyze both surface and subsurface anomalies in materials or structures by imaging submicroscopic changes to a test surface when an appropriate stress is applied. Although laser light is a nonpenetrating radiation, shearography and holography can inspect aerospace structures for discontinuities such as impact damage, disbonds, delaminations, inclusions, near-surfaces porosity, wrinkled fibers, fiber bridging, and cracks.

In addition, shearography can perform nearly in real time, that is, can provide images while it scans. Shearographic and holographic images are relatively easy to interpret.
